Preface

In 1964, practitioners of biological weed control inaugurated a series of international meetings for weed biological control scientists, which have been held every four years since the original meeting. This series of meetings has been a vital force for information exchange, development of internal strength and cohesion in their group, helping them to resolve issues and meet new challenges to practical use of biological weed control. As a result, weed biological control has prospered.

In contrast, no such forum has existed prior to 2002 for biological control of insects and mites. Rather, this group has exchanged information at larger, more general meetings (such as meetings of national entomology societies) or at narrowly focused meetings such as those on host specificity testing, nontarget impacts, or natural enemy biology. This lack of a forum for arthropod biological control scientists has held back the discipline and made it less effective in meeting new challenges (which are many and growing) to its practical use. This volume is the proceedings of a meeting, held January 14-18, 2002 in Honolulu, Hawaii, U.S.A., that intiated a new meeting series (held every four years) that is designed to provide a unified forum for scientists engaged in biological control of arthropods. Focus areas of the ISBCA meetings will include conservation, augmentation and importation of new natural enemies for biological control of arthropod targets using parasitoids or predators. The intent of the initiators of this series of meetings is to create a meeting for practitioners that can build cohesion within the discipline, and foster discussions of issues affecting our work.

This volume is divided into two parts. The first section presents the oral presentations, grouped within their symposia, in the order of their presentation. The second section consists of works presented as posters, in alphabetical order by first author. Works are represented as full manuscripts, abstracts, or titles, according to the wishes of the presenters.
